The prosecutor may reopen Kaczynski’s ‘Twin Towers’. What about the Tribunal of State?
‘The public prosecutor’s office ought to clear itself of its disgrace, and I think the matter of Jarosław Kaczyński’s “Twin Towers” investment is one of its biggest,’ Jacek Dubois tells us. As a judge of the Tribunal of State, he is wondering how to depoliticize the restoration of justice
PiS Threatens to Take Over Courts, Liquidate Supreme Court, and Challenge CJEU
PiS is not hiding the fact that it wants to destroy the independent courts in Poland. It is admitting this in its election programme. It is promising the liquidation of the current courts and the establishment of new ones with ‘its own’ judges. Independent judges will be removed or retired
Kaczyński announces the takeover of the courts after the elections. He threatens: ‘No one will stop us’
The Law and Justice (PiS) party chairman promised a final crackdown on the courts at an election rally. In practice, this will mean liquidating the current courts, removing independent judges from them and appointing ‘their own.’ If PiS wins the elections and does this, it will result in a major clash with the EU.
Kaczyński at a rally in Płock, suddenly asked about the ‘milestones’ in the National Recovery Plan. ‘No more of this good stuff!’
‘We have really demonstrated maximum goodwill. From the point of view of the treaties, we are under no obligation to listen to the Union on the justice system. None whatsoever,’ said Jarosław Kaczyński, when asked about the ‘milestones’ in the National Recovery Plan during a successive pre-election meeting.
Giertych will report the matter of monitoring him to the Italian prosecution service
They were most probably afraid of the recording of Jarosław Kaczyński and Gerald Birgfellner as the latter handed Jarosław Kaczyński 50,000 zlotys in an envelope – this is what Roman Giertych says in a special recording about the reasons for using the Pegasus program against him. “From what experts at the University of Toronto told me, this was the most aggressive use of Pegasus they had observed,” he said.
Judge Żurek: the authorities will try to bribe and intimidate the judges. But this won’t work
‘The authorities will try to use the carrot-and-stick method: a stick for those judges who are fighting for the rule of law, and a carrot for those they try to persuade over to them,’ believes Judge Waldemar Żurek. We discuss scenarios of further changes in courts and judges’ reactions to them
Why Hungary and Poland Block the EU Budget Deal
The Hungarian and Polish governments are united in defending their autocratizing political models, whatever it takes politically. However, there is also a significant difference between Poland and Hungary. While Poland is largely free from large-scale, systemic corruption plaguing EU funds, the Hungarian regime’s political-economic model is based on state-led, centralized corruption structures and the deliberate misuse of EU funds.
Kaczyński threatens judges in Poland with disciplinary proceedings for court judgments
Jarosław Kaczyński: “there is indeed a problem in Poland with the rule of law, but the main sources of this state of affairs are court judgments contra legem. It is our duty to ensure that these judgments made in conflict with the law are swiftly revoked and the judges who issue them held accountable on disciplinary charges and, consequently, removed from the profession.”
Who is going to be the new Commissioner for Human Rights in Poland?
The Commissioner for Human Rights Adam Bodnar’s five-year term of office ends on 9 September. It is likely that PiS will treat the election of the new Commissioner as a show of hegemony and a symbolic retaliation against Bodnar as well as lawyers and civil society activists involved in the defence of the rule of law, which means there will be a ‘trench warfare’ between the Sejm and Senate in the autumn
“Boorish rabble!”: Kaczyński insulted the opposition parties in the Sejm
Kaczyński’s outburst of 4 June 2020 has a political dimension and may be harmful to President Duda’s campaign
