The prosecution is requesting the lifting of Marcin Romanowski’s immunity.
Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar has today submitted a request to the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to lift Marcin Romanowski’s immunity.
On July 15, a politician from Sovereign Poland was detained. The National Prosecutor’s Office brought charges against him in connection with an investigation concerning the Justice Fund, which Romanowski managed in his capacity as deputy minister and subordinate to Zbigniew Ziobro. On July 16, the court released Romanowski, siding with the defense’s argument that his immunity as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which had not been lifted, protected him. This interpretation was also presented in a written statement addressed to the prosecution by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
On September 27, 2024, the District Court in Warsaw dismissed the prosecutor’s appeal against the decision of the Warsaw-Mokotów District Court issued on July 16.
The next session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe begins tomorrow and will last several days. It remains unclear whether the assembly will decide on the matter of Marcin Romanowski during this session.
