Joint statement of July 2018 in defense of acting Human Rights Commissioner who had been subject of political attacks

As former Commissioners for Human Rights we express our opposition to the instrumental treatment of human rights in the national political struggle. We consider disturbing and reprehensible the attempts made to discredit the work and the person of Adam Bodnar, 7th term Commissioner for Human Rights, made by means of a dissenting opinion of the Constitutional Tribunal, a measure used improperly and in bad faith, unprofessionally and in violation of good practice. Adam Bodnar has provided evidence of reliable legal knowledge and commitment to serving human rights, in accordance with the Constitution, international agreements ratified by Poland and the ethos of the Ombudsperson’s office as we know it, believe in and practiced. We voice our opinion today so that political, ad-hoc quarrels do not overshadow and hinder actions taken for the protection of human rights.”

Prof. Ewa Łętowska, Commissioner for Human Rights (I term)

Prof. Adam Zieliński, Commissioner for Human Rights (III term)

Prof. Andrzej Zoll, Commissioner for Human Rights (IV term)
